A Word from the Author
“My generation—the Baby Boomers—and certainly my parent’s’ generation—the Greatest Generation—have lived their lives in two different cultures. The first we inherited from our colonial ancestors and the founding fathers of our nation. This culture, called Judeo-Christian, put God, family, and country at the top of our priorities. It was a culture where sexual modesty was respected, and vulgarity, profanity, and obscenity were socially censured. It was a culture that insisted on the sanctity of human life and promoted charity and compassion in human relationships. The second half of our lives has been lived in a different culture—a culture created for us by people who do not share the values or spiritual outlook of the first. This new culture is a strange hybrid: part secular humanist, part neo-pagan. America is now experiencing a cultural crisis based on the conflicting values and aims of these two cultures. This ‘culture war’ has been developing over the last 60 years of American history but has now reached a decisive turning point. When I retired after a long career as an educator—teaching history, philosophy, and world religion—I decided to write a book explaining this cultural crisis, including its causes, its social effects, and America’s probable long-term outcome. American Crisis: The Collapse of Christian Culture is the result of eight years of research and writing.
My personal history is also the product of these two cultures. I was raised in a loving Christian household and accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior at an early age. But, like many young people who reached adulthood in the 1960s and 70s, I followed the road of the ‘prodigal son.’ I left home to seek adventure and pleasure, backpacking in Europe and, on one occasion, even sleeping in a cave on the island of Crete. I thank God that my core values never changed. The loving and morally upright example of my parents and my early Christian education were an irresistible magnet drawing me back to God and truth. American Crisis: The Collapse of Christian Culture is my tribute to the life-saving qualities of Judeo-Christian culture and a warning of the ‘outer darkness’ into which our nation is entering by abandoning it.”
